Froude, Richard Hurrell ___ 1803-1836 ___ British ___ priest, teacher

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Froude, the son of a clergyman, was born at Dartington, Devon, and educated at Eton and Oriel College, Oxford, where he came under the influence of John Keble. He was also a friend of Isaac Williams. Froude went on to become a Fellow of Oriel in 1826. In 1832, Froude went abroad for health reasons, accompanied by his father, Archdeacon Froude, and Newman. Not long after his return, Keble, Williams and Froude founded the so-called Oxford Movement, aimed at reforming the Church of England. Froude is particularly remembered for his essays in the 'Tracts of the Times' which advanced the Oxford Movement's opinions. Still suffering from consumption, he went abroad again, this time to Barbados, but, not long after returning to England, died at his father's house in Devon. His colleagues decided to include his short diary, which is full of self-recrimination, in a collection of his essays and letters - his 'Remains', which were published the year after his death.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS: 1) The first line of basic information may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown, or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British' a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies. 4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges, and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising. I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries.

AND SO MADE
SIGNIFICANT . .

. . . is the world’s greatest online anthology of diary extracts. It is pre-sented by calendar day, in the same way as books such as The Assassin’s Cloak and The Faber Book of Diaries. However, this anthology includes more, and many longer, extracts than is possible in a published book. For each quoted extract there is a link to a Diary Review article with: further ex-tracts, biographical information, contexts, a portrait, and links to online sources/etexts.
