Lagerlöf, Selma ___ 1858-1940 ___ Swedish ___ writer

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Selma Lagerlöf was born in Östra Emterwik, Värmland, and brought up and tutored on the family estate, Mårbacka. In 1881, she moved to Stockholm and studied at a teachers' college, before, in 1885, taking a position at a school in Landskrona. In 1890, a Swedish weekly magazine awarded her first prize in a literary competition, and the following year, her book 'Gösta Berlings Saga' was published. By 1895, she was receiving sufficient financial support from the royal family and the Swedish Academy to forgo teaching and concentrate on writing. Subsequently, she travelled in Italy which inspired her to write 'Antikris Mirakler' ('The Miracles of Antichrist' ), published in 1897, a novel set in Sicily. Her other books included 'Jerusalem', 'Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige' ('The Wonderful Adventures of Nils') and the Löwenskölds historical trilogy. In 1909, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first Swedish person to be so honoured, and the first woman. With the prize money, she bought back the Mårbacka family estate which had been sold on the death of her father. During the First World War, Lagerlöf had been very disturbed and was not able to write much, as the Second World War approached, she helped German intellectuals and artists escape Nazi persecution. She also managed to arrange a Swedish visa for the poet Nelly Sachs, and saved her from a death camp. The Diary of Selma Lagerlöf is, in fact, largely fictional.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS: 1) The first line of basic information may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown, or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British' a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies. 4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges, and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising. I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries.

SIGNIFICANT . .

. . . is the world’s greatest online anthology of diary extracts. It is pre-sented by calendar day, in the same way as books such as The Assassin’s Cloak and The Faber Book of Diaries. However, this anthology includes more, and many longer, extracts than is possible in a published book. For each quoted extract there is a link to a Diary Review article with: further ex-tracts, biographical information, contexts, a portrait, and links to online sources/etexts.

A fictional memoir spanning the whole of the 21st cent-ury: one man’s - Kip Fenn’s - frank account, some-times acutely painful and some-times surprisingly joyful, of his three partners, and his career in inter-national diplomacy working to tackle the rich-poor divide.
