Cory, William Johnson ___ 1823-1892 ___ British ___ teacher

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Cory was born to a Devonshire family, educated at Eton and Kings College, Cambridge, and then returned to Eton to work as an assistant master for over 25 years. He is said to have been a brilliant teacher and to have had a great influence over many of his pupils, some of whom went on to be celebrities of their age. He also developed a reputation as a poet, his chief work being 'Ionica'. Having inherited an estate at Halsdon in 1872, he left Eton and took on the name Cory. He did not marry until he was 55. Thereafter, he spent four years in Madeira before settling in Hampstead, North London, in 1882. His elder brother, Charles Wellington Johnson (who, on the death of their father in 1854 took the name of Furse), was archdeacon of Westminster from 1894 till his death. Extracts from Cory's letters and journals were edited by F.W. Cornish and published, with funds raised by friends and former pupils, in 1897.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS: 1) The first line of basic information may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown, or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British' a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies. 4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges, and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising. I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries.

AND SO MADE
SIGNIFICANT . .

. . . is the world’s greatest online anthology of diary extracts. It is pre-sented by calendar day, in the same way as books such as The Assassin’s Cloak and The Faber Book of Diaries. However, this anthology includes more, and many longer, extracts than is possible in a published book. For each quoted extract there is a link to a Diary Review article with: further ex-tracts, biographical information, contexts, a portrait, and links to online sources/etexts.
