Brenan, Gerald ___ 1894-1987 ___ British (born in Malta) ___ writer

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Brenan was born in Malta, the son of an English army officer, and spent his early years in India and South Africa. He studied at Radley College and Sandhurst, and did some travelling in Europe with John Hope-Johnstone before joining the 5th Gloucesters in 1914. At the end of the war, he was awarded the Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre. In 1919, Brenan was introduced to the Bloomsbury group, and met Ralph Partridge, Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington. The same year he went to Spain, and domiciled himself in the small village of Yegen. He had a brief affair with Carrington, who had recently married Ralph Partridge, nevertheless the three of them stayed friends. In 1930, he married an American poetess Gamel Woolsey. In 1934, the Brenans left Yegen to live in Churriana, but then, seven weeks after the civil war started in 1936, theyy went to Gibraltar and thence to England (where they lived at Aldbourne), not returning to Spain until 1953. Once back in Spain, Brenan wrote his most famous and autobiographical works, including 'South from Granada', 'A Life of One's Own', and 'A Personal Record'. Brenan was awarded the Order of Commander of the British Empire in 1982; and in 1984 was declared a living monument of Spain.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAUTIONS: 1) The first line of basic information may be incomplete in several ways: some historical figures have different names (titles, pen-names); their birth and death dates may be unknown or uncertain (g - guess, c - circa); similarly, their occupations may be unknown, or they may have had other jobs; and, for early diarists, I've used 'British' a bit too freely. 2) The biographical summary may not be accurate. It was compiled quickly from various sources, mostly on the internet, and the facts were not checked anywhere near as rigorously as they would have been if they'd been intended for publication in a printed form. 3) The journal dates and descriptors (which are in no particular order) must be treated with caution: since I have not examined the diaries myself, the descriptors are only guesses based on bibliographies, anthologies and internet biographies. 4) For the biography and etext links, I have ignored any sites with charges, and I have avoided, wherever possible, those with pop-ups or too much advertising. I have limited myself to providing three etext links where there is some variety between them. 5) For the original manuscript links, I have limited myself to providing a maximum of two (although, for a few diarists, their original diaries are held in more than two places). 6) I have provided the titles - chosen randomly - for up to three printed editions of the diaries.

AND SO MADE
SIGNIFICANT . .

. . . is the world’s greatest online anthology of diary extracts. It is pre-sented by calendar day, in the same way as books such as The Assassin’s Cloak and The Faber Book of Diaries. However, this anthology includes more, and many longer, extracts than is possible in a published book. For each quoted extract there is a link to a Diary Review article with: further ex-tracts, biographical information, contexts, a portrait, and links to online sources/etexts.

A fictional memoir spanning the whole of the 21st cent-ury: one man’s - Kip Fenn’s - frank account, some-times acutely painful and some-times surprisingly joyful, of his three partners, and his career in inter-national diplomacy working to tackle the rich-poor divide.
